Kirsten Kangelaris, MD

Professor

Dr. Kangelaris is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine (DHM) in the Department of Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. She is the Associate Director of the Academic Hospital Medicine fellowship and an Inquiry Advisor at UCSF Medical School. She leads the DHM Works-in-Progress session, serves as the On-boarding Ambassador to new DHM faculty and fellows, and chairs the DHM Internal Grants Program.
Her research program is focused on the evolution of organ dysfunction in sepsis. She currently leads the clinical operations and data management of a large observational study of COVID-19 (COMET) and is co-investigator in several COVID-19 randomized controlled trials (ACTIV-3, ACTIV-4, I-SPY and ORCHID). A major objective of her research is to improve understanding of the heterogeneity of sepsis impacting physician recognition and disease-specific response to therapy. Her research encompasses several different approaches across the translational spectrum including electronic health record based-clinical studies, prospective clinical studies of adult patients combined with biomarker studies including DNA genomic, mRNA gene expression, plasma proteins and cell-based protein studies.
Her clinical work focuses on the care of hospitalized adults and she attends on the teaching service at Moffitt-Long hospital.
Dr. Kangelaris completed medical school, internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, and completed a General Medicine Research Fellowship and a Master's of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research at UCSF. She joined faculty in the Division of Hospital Medicine at UCSF in 2010. She is a Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and member of the American Thoracic Society. She serves as the co-chair of the Research submissions for the RIV competition at SHM.
