Vision

Health is achievable for even the most vulnerable populations in our world. Health care can be improved by applying principles of equity, quality, and safety.

Mission

The Global Health Core (GHC) within the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, aims to improve the health of vulnerable populations throughout the world by adapting the unique skill sets of academic hospitalists to resource poor settings to reduce the burden of disease and realize global health equity.
These skills broadly include health systems strengthening, medical education, quality improvement, knowledge sharing, and clinically competent care of acutely ill patients. Through direct experience and scholarship, these hospitalists will add depth and breadth to sustainable and innovative research, service and training in the field of global health.

Teach - train future health professionals at UCSF and at partner sites
Improve - develop health systems strengthening, quality and safety, including through scholarship and dissemination
Partner sustainably - collaborate longitudinally with academic institutions, governments and non-governmental organizations (NGO) abroad

Projects

Global Health Hospital Medicine Fellowship
Started in 2012, the goal of the 1-year UCSF Global Health-Hospital Medicine Fellowship (GHHMF) is to train the next generation of hospitalists to become leaders in the areas of quality improvement, patient safety, medical education, and health systems strengthening, in resource limited settings.

Non-Communicable Diseases
Global non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases and diabetes are responsible for skyrocketing rates of death and disability in low and middle income countries, yet fall outside of the traditional paradigm of global health intervention that prioritizes infectious diseases. Hospitalists are uniquely equipped to intervene in the area of global NCDs. The emphasis of hospital medicine on quality improvement and safety naturally translate into developing effective systems for chronic care integration into global settings. We seek to use this natural synergy between hospital medicine and the global NCD interventions to provide effective solutions for this growing epidemic. Pathways to Discovery in Global Health
Our faculty have been heavily involved in teaching and mentoring trainees in the School of Medicine's Pathways program. The vision of the Pathways program "is to support and develop lifetime commitments to decreasing the health inequities and disparities in populations throughout the world."

Masters of Science in Global Health
