Elizabeth Adkins Murphy, MD
Medical Director of
Nighttime Hospitalist Service

The Nighttime Hospitalist Service at UCSF Medical Center oversees the medical care of UCSF Medicine patients overnight. Nocturnists at UCSF care for some of the sickest Medicine patients, work closely with residents, and are key participants in the teaching of residents and medical students on the UCSF Medicine Service. The UCSF Nighttime Hospitalist Service has steadily expanded and become ever more crucial to the achievement of clinical and educational excellence for which the UCSF Medical Center continually strives.

Responsibilities for Nocturnists on the Nighttime Hospitalist Service include admission of Medicine patients overnight, admission and cross-cover of Advanced Heart Failure patients overnight, and Medicine Consults overnight. The Nocturnists staff and supervise all Medicine ICU admissions to the open ICU by Medicine housestaff and supervise the cross-cover Medicine resident. The Nocturnists also provide nightly teaching sessions for UCSF Medicine residents and medical students.

Nocturnists on the Nighttime Hospitalist Service serve as an important resource for UCSF Medicine patients and the clinical staff caring for them at night. Their work allows for round-the-clock backup, supervision, and education for our complex patient population and excellent residents.
